Vicarious Trauma in Residence Life: Supporting Yourself & Your Staff

Wednesday, May 22nd - 10am-11am MDT

With the rise in mental health concerns, distressing current events, and the needs of our students, Residence Life professionals are expected to respond to numerous challenging incidents and crises. As a result, Residence Life professionals, as well as their staff members, may be affected by vicarious trauma in witnessing or supporting students through these difficult events. This program will allow participants to learn more about how traumatic events can impact work and life, strategize plans to care for themselves and their staffs as they work through crises, and recognize and honor the challenging work we do in Residence Life.

About the Presenter: Sadie Downs is currently a Residence Life Coordinator at Colorado School of Mines where she also advises the Residence Hall Association. She first became involved in residence life through her time as an undergraduate at the University of Northern Colorado and graduate experience at Bowling Green State University. After working in live-on residence life positions for seven years, starting with her Resident Assistant experience, and through supervising student staff, Sadie became interested in how the unique work we do as residence life professionals affects ourselves and others. Sadie enjoys exploring the mountains and exploring coffee shops, learning new things, and also serves on the AIMHO 365 Committee
