Campus Safety is one of the toughest issues to navigate on a college campus due to the desire to be open and welcoming while balancing that with the need to provide significant security and safety measures. Emergency events occur all too often (fires, floods, medical, mental health and weapons) and it is not a matter of if, but when it will happen on your campus. We will explore your perceived role versus your actual role – what people expect versus the training that we have provided. We all have a role in securing our campus, our housing, and our students. This program will discuss the various roles and responsibilities of a first time professional to a seasoned housing director.

Presenters: Brad Shade, Jed Cummins & Dave Wilcox

Brad Shade is the Director of Housing Services at the University of Northern Colorado. This is his 3rd Directorship in his career. Brad collected both his BS and MA from UNC and truly bleeds blue and gold. He has been an active participant in the AIMHO Region for over 25 years and has served in a variety of roles and numerous committees. He has dealt with his share of emergencies, tragedies and issues that have resulted in many changed practices, training and preparations. As a father of 2 college students, he is passionate about protecting all students and providing the training & resources to mitigate as many emergencies as possible.

Jediah Cummins is the Assistant Director of Housing Services at the University of Northern Colorado. In his role, he works to ensure that all of Apartments, Houses, and Residence Halls at UNC are looking excellent through work with staff from Custodial, Utility Crew, Facilities Management, and Information Management and Technology. In AIMHO Jed is the Technology Coordinator, a passion that he also has in his everyday life. Jed also works within the City of Greeley, CO to help provide low-income housing and other resources to the community though the Greeley Urban renewal Authority. Jed is a graduate from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Computer Science and has his Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from Texas Tech University and Brewing Science certificate from UNC. He is currently pursuing an MBA at UNC.

Dave Wilcox completed his bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northern Colorado and has been a long time AIMHO participant. He has been to over 15 AIMHO conferences and was formerly on the AIMHO Executive Board as well as being a SHO committee member and the SHO chair. For the past 16 years, he has been living and working in Santa Barbara, California (serving students that attend both UC-Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College). He is the Executive Director and Owner of the management company that oversees a privately owned 1000 bed college residence hall (Tropicana Student Living). To this day, he still calls the AIMHO region his home region.
