Award Categories & Descriptions


AIMHO 2012 Nominations Are Currently Closed. Please keep thinking about those on your campus or the region you think would make great nominees and check back regularly for nomination timeline and information.

Outstanding New Professional Award– The Outstanding New Professional award is presented every year to an individual who has been in the profession less than three years and is employed at an AIMHO member school.  The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO Conference.
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently employed at an AIMHO member school.
  • Currently has been working in the profession for three years or less.
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life profession.
Outstanding Graduate Student Award - The Outstanding Graduate Student award is presented every year to a graduate student attending an AIMHO member school.  The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO Conference.
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student at an AIMHO member school.
  • Currently living in a residence hall, college, or university housing.
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life program and university community on his or her campus.
  • Preference will be given to students who are working, or plan to work in, the area of Student Affairs, especially with college/university housing.
Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award - The Outstanding Undergraduate Student award is presented every year to an undergraduate student attending an AIMHO member school.  The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO Conference.
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at an AIMHO member school.
  • Currently living in a residence hall, college, or university housing.
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life program and university community on his or her campus.
  • Preference will be given to students who are working, or plan to work in, the area of Student Affairs, especially with college and university housing.
Distinguished Service Awards - This award is designed to recognize years of service, dedication and significant contributions to students in the residence halls and the residential community.  All staff levels (custodial, clerical, professional, etc.) will be considered.  This is an opportunity to recognize a member of your staff who has served Student Housing or Residence Life in an outstanding manner and worked to strengthen the community on your campus.  This can also be an opportunity to recognize a staff member who cannot be nominated for the traditional awards most campuses offer.  This award can be presented to more than one person each year, and nominees are not required to attend the AIMHO conference where recipients will be announced. 
 Only one nomination from each school will be considered.

Criteria for selection:  Significant contribution to Student Housing/Residence Life or Food Services must be apparent.  Please indicate to what extent the following standards are met:
  • Sincerely and consistently does his/her job at a high level of performance.
  • Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the Residence Life program and maintains an outstanding attitude toward job assignments and fellow employees.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude and willingness to go beyond what is expected when assisting students, staff and guests.
  • Has served a minimum of five years at the nominating college or university.
Outstanding Mid-Level Professional AwardThe Outstanding Mid-Level Professional award is presented every year to a housing professional that is currently working in an Associate Director, Assistant Director, Area (Hall) Manager/Coordinator, or equivalent level at an AIMHO member school.  The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO Conference.
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently working in one of the defined managerial level positions listed above.
  • Currently employed at an AIMHO member school.
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life program and university community on his or her campus.
The Professional/Graduate Student Social Justice Action Award - The Professional/Graduate Student Social Justice Action Award is presented every year to an individual working at an AIMHO member school who enhances diversity and social justice awareness, understanding, and education. The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO Conference.
 
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently employed at an AIMHO member school.
  • Must be a faculty/staff member or graduate student at an AIMHO member school.
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life program and university community on his/her/hir* campus.
(* “hir” is a gender neutral derivation of the pronouns “him” and “her” [it is pronounced “here”])
 
Undergraduate Student Social Justice Action AwardThe Undergraduate Student Social Justice Action Award is presented every year to an undergraduate student attending an AIMHO member school who enhances diversity and social justice awareness, understanding, and education.  The award will be presented at the annual AIMHO conference.  
A successful nominee must meet the following criteria:
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at an AIMHO member school. 
  • Currently living in a residence hall/apartment affiliated with the housing department at their institution.   
  • Contributes significantly to the Residence Life program and university community on his/her/hir* campus.  (*"hir" is a gender neutral derivation of the pronouns "him" and "her" - it is pronounced "here")
AIMHO Outstanding Service Award - The AIMHO Outstanding Service award is designed to acknowledge the contributions of a professional in the AIMHO region.  The award will be given to an individual who has made significant contribution to the success of a Committee or the Executive Board as a Committee Chair/Member or an Executive Board Member over the past year (since the previous annual conference).  This individual must be involved within the AIMHO region, or have enhanced the region’s success on a national/international level.
